Comics and Coffee

Productive Monday at the comics and coffee cafe near Jordan's parents' house. I love this place. ☕ Got myself a bagel 🥯, sat down, and just — stayed. The whole day.

There's something about working in a space where other people are doing their own thing around you. The morning crew of blonde middle-aged women playing mahjong 🀄 is always fun to watch. Other groups filter in throughout the day — boardgames, laptops, conversations. It's the right kind of background noise. Not distracting, just alive.

Made real progress on the game 🎮. The big decision today was about character faces — I've been going back and forth on how to handle the icons for the people in the game, and I landed on using an existing method rather than trying to hand-craft every face in SVG. I don't have the skillset or the time right now to do all of that from scratch, and that's fine. Version 1 doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to exist.

That's the kind of trade-off I'm getting better at making. Letting good enough be good enough so the thing actually gets built.

At some point Jordan's mom took us to get ice cream 🍦, which was nice. I love doing the 4-flavor sampler — getting to try a bunch of different things. This time though I only really enjoyed the walnut one, or whatever nutty flavor it was. 😂

Later at night we watched The Mummy 3 🎬. I don't have a ton of reflections on it honestly, but I remembered watching it as a kid and being amazed by the graphics. This time around what stuck with me was the immortal daughter — the idea that she refuses to fall in love because she's afraid of losing people, even after two millennia. And I was like... two thousand years? You'd think she would've experimented by then. Unless she's got a really strong adherence to the past, which I guess tracks — but imagine what you could accomplish with a 2,000-year lifespan. You could accomplish SO much. The not-trying feels less like grief and more like a choice at that point. 🤷
